Think back to when you were applying for your current job.

What made you think you should apply?

Was it the job description? Or perhaps the salary? Maybe the requirements perfectly matched your skill set?

In this blog post, we’ll give you all the best tips on how to write an international teacher job advert. There’s no time like the present, so let’s take a look.

What information should I include?

Although it might seem obvious, knowing what to include and what not to include is pretty important when writing an international teacher job advert.

You need to get across the key information quickly, and in a way that’s easy to skim read.

So avoid writing chunky blocks of text and always use concise language.

Firstly, the basics…

Job title

  • Make sure it accurately represents the position available. If it’s unclear, you risk attracting candidates who aren’t suited to the position.
  • Be specific with the level of education the position involves and include the year group/s the candidate will be teaching e.g. ‘Biology Teacher (Year 8-10)’.

Location

  • State the location clearly and be as precise as possible. Teachers want to know where your school is to help them plan ahead.
  • If you can, add the continent, country, city and town.

Salary bracket

  • Insert a clear salary bracket. Moving abroad is a big decision, so the more exact you can be, the more helpful it’ll be for their independent research.

Start date

  • Let your candidates know when you expect them to start.

Application deadline

  • Set an application deadline date so they know when they need to apply by.

Now for the detail…

Qualifications and skills

  • Be clear on what skills and qualifications are a must-have for the position and those that are desirable.
  • To make it easy to skim read, use bullet points. And list the required qualifications and then the required skills e.g.

Teacher job description

  • Provide a detailed teacher job description that spells out exactly what the role will involve. If the job responsibilities aren’t clear, candidates won’t know what to expect.
  • Use clear and concise sentences. A good teacher job advert might say something like ‘you’ll be responsible for monitoring the academic progress of our SEN pupils’.

About your school

  • Introduce teachers to your school and tell them a little bit about it. Let them know things such as how many students there are, what year groups your school teaches, where your teachers and students are from etc.
  • Only include information that’s useful. At this stage, teachers don’t need to know everything about your school. They don’t need to know if your school hall has just been refurbished, but they do need to know if your school is split across two sites.

How should I organise my international teacher job advert?

How can I attract the right teachers?

Use emotive language

Be enthusiastic.
You want to excite teachers and make them want to join your school.

Add phrases like ‘our school is located in a vibrant city’ or ‘join our friendly team of teachers’.

Stick to recruitment language.
You need to come across as professional and trustworthy.

Use verbs like ‘contributing’, ‘supporting’, ‘managing’, ‘monitoring’, ‘leading’, ‘educating’ – you get the idea.

Benefits

Tell them what they’ll gain

Emphasise what the benefits are.
For example, will candidates gain invaluable teaching experience?

Will they be able to immerse
themselves in a new culture?

Will your position help them to boost
their future career prospects?

Will they get to join a community of
hard-working, talented and
friendly teachers?

Schools online presence

A strong online presence

Social media.
Once they’ve viewed your job advert, interested teachers will check out your school’s social media channels, so make sure they can easily find you. And try to post regularly during the recruitment period to excite teachers and make them want to apply.

Website.
Make sure the content on your school website is up-to-date by doing the following:

Update your staff page so teachers can e-meet the team in advance.

Use up-to-date, high-quality photos. They need to accurately reflect how your school looks now, not 10 years ago.
